The Yangtze River Delta Regional New Sinology Program doctoral seminar took place at Fudan University on May 10-11, 2025, marking a significant event aimed at enhancing academic exchanges in the region. This seminar was co-hosted by the Ministry of Education's Sino-Foreign Language Exchange and Cooperation Center along with Fudan University and involved collaboration from notable institutions such as East China Normal University, Nanjing University, Shanghai Foreign Studies University, and Zhejiang University.
Attending the seminar was Wang Yong, the director of the Sinology Research Department of the Language Cooperation Center. The delegation from our institution included Vice Dean Cheng Lei from the School of International Education, three doctoral students partaking in the New Sinology Program, three doctoral supervisors, and additional project-related personnel.
The opening ceremony featured a presentation by TUNGAMIRAI ERIC MUPONA, a 2023 doctoral student, who shared insights and experiences from his studies in China. Following this, the seminar was structured into three distinct segments: special lectures, academic seminars, and thematic discussions, facilitating a comprehensive exploration of relevant topics.
One notable lecture was delivered by Zhang Yong, a doctoral supervisor from the School of Media and International Culture, who discussed the theme 'Sinology Narratives in China-Africa Documentaries: Using as an Example.' Additionally, our doctoral students TUNGAMIRAI ERIC MUPONA, ABUBAKER ELSIDDIG AHMED ELMUSTAFA ELSHEIKH HAYATY, and CHENG ZHEN presented their academic research directions, receiving valuable feedback from their mentors.
Throughout the seminar, doctoral students, supervisors, and project managers engaged in focused discussions with representatives from the Language Cooperation Center. These discussions revolved around student training strategies and project management specific to the New Sinology Project, fostering an environment of collaborative knowledge-sharing.
The outcomes of this seminar reinforced the connections among universities within the Yangtze River Delta region, consolidating efforts to elevate the quality and impact of the New Sinology Program. Such collaboration is essential for nurturing innovative scholarship and fostering cross-cultural understanding.
